Kilauea
212001
Kilauea and Mauna Loa are two
of the world’s most active volcanoes. Mauna Loa, at 13,677 feet
high, is the most massive mountain in the world, occupying an area
of 19,000 cubic miles and last erupted in the 1980s. Kilauea Caldera,
according to Hawaii Legends, is the home of Pele, the Hawaii goddess
of volcanoes and fire and is the sight of the Parks ongoing flow
since the 1983 eruption of Pu’u O’o on the flank of Kilauea. The
natural environment of Kilauea and Mauna Loa provide a fascinating
world of stunning natural beauty, active volcanism, unique ecosystems
and distinct human culture. |
