Kalapana Black Sand Beach
|
The ancient settlement and black sand beaches of Kalapana which
were approximately 40 miles from the Resort were over run by lava
flows in 1989. Take Highway 11 toward Kea’au and turn right
onto Highway 130 at Kea’au. Continue on 130 past Pahoa and
drive to the end of Highway 130. Then turn right onto Highway 137.
The newly formed Kalapana beach is a 20 minutes walk across the lava
field. This beach is good for beach-combing, surfing, fishing and
enjoying the sun but ocean conditions are dangerous.
