Mookini Heiau & Birthplace of King Kamehameha
|
This 1500-year-old stone temple is the oldest and largest sacred
religious site in Hawaii. The Mookini Heiau was used by Kings and
chiefs to pray and to offer human sacrifices. The massive three-story
stone temple was dedicated to Ku, the Hawaiian god of
war and was erected in around 480 A.D. It was said that each huge
stone was passed hand to hand from Pololu Valley, 14 miles away,
by 18,000 men who worked from sunrise to sunset. This important historic
site should be approached with respect. Nearby this National historic
landmark is the birthplace of King Kamehameha I who united Hawaii.
