| Green Sands Beach (Papakolea) |
This beach, which was formed during an earlier eruption of Mauna
Loa, is made up of green-colored Olivine crystals that are formed
when conditions are right during volcanic eruptions. The beach is
not accessible by two wheel drive vehicle and requires those accessing
its unique beauty must endure a bumpy four-wheel-drive road or a
three-mile hike along the shoreline from the parking area at South
Point. The landscape of the surrounding area is otherworldly and
the beach is nestled in a volcanic cinder cone creating the impression
of a lunar beach experience. Ocean conditions can be dangerous and
no lifeguards are stationed so approach with caution.
