Kalopa State Park

Above the old plantation town of Pau'auilo, Kalopa State Park's lush forest and cool fresh air (elevation 2000ft) can be enjoyed by walking the easy one (1) mile loop trail. Many of the plants along the trail are labeled with the plant's names. Other more challenging trails begin at the park. The park has picnic tables, restrooms, and cabins that are available for rent. Access the park via the strikingly beautiful drive from Hilo along the Hamakua coast.

Waipio Valley

Camping is allowed with a permit along the beach in Waipio Valley on the look-out side of the river. The area is very popular with locals on weekends so secure your permits early. Camping is also allowed with a permit in Waimau Valley and at a shelter along the Waimanu trail. Permits can be obtained at the state Department of forestry in Hilo or online.
